Carol held a seminar on “Speaking Up for the Voiceless in Adoption” at Carleton University School of Social Work. She spoke of the support received from faculty and students at the School during her reunion with her own birth mother and during the writing of her book. She read passages from the book to make key issues come alive, such as the right of adoptees to know their origins, that challenged current perceptions about adoption, and provided examples of social work practice and social change. She spoke of loss as the foundation of adoption, of factors that come into play when an adoptee searches for birth family, and of the healing power of reunion. She presented a graph to show social work practice in a domestic adoption. Those who attended the session showed interest and insight in their comments and questions. |
